The cabbage palm,
Sabal palmetto, is a native landscape workhorse, with a lot of strengths and a few notable weaknesses. Join us in an exploration of what cabbage palms can and cannot do in the landscape. We’ll review the role of the cabbage palm in natural landscapes and how the palm’s natural behaviors translate into suburban and urban situations. In addition to updates on the latest thinking regarding diseases and pruning, the instructor will present illustrations of how these palms can be use in the landscape, review the various options for acquiring cabbage palms (seedlings, wild dug, and regenerated), as well as showcasing some of the more unusual variants that appeal to collectors. Along the way you’ll learn some surprising information about celebrities and cabbage palms, the cabbage palm’s unique role in our revolutionary war, and why extraterrestrials may know more about cabbage palms than your neighbors do.
